3:46 am - Quick synopsis
The last couple months of this year can fuck right the fuck off and die in a fire.

However, my band rocks. I'm digging what we do.

A lot.

Maybe there will be more of a explanation post before the end of the year, maybe not.

But yeah, music. Fuck. Yes. We make it, and we make it heavy.

2:42 pm - So, for the 3 of you that don't know:
I'm in a band again, and we've been working on some stuff.

We've got a Facebook page:

http://www.facebook.com/SheduBand

This page tracks our shows and whatnot. We recently put our first track up. You should go listen to it. Mind you, I feel obligated to point out that it's a work in progress and a (well mixed) room recording at that, but I'm actually pretty proud of how it turned out.

There's an alternate place to find the track, if you hates the books of faces:

http://soundcloud.com/shedu

Check it out if you like, and we're always looking for feedback. Feel free to friend/fan/whatever us if you dig it.

4:45 pm - Good trip, and other stuff
Back from the cross country jaunt, which I may or may not get around to doing a pictorial write up of some time in the near-ish future. It was good.

Now comes the pack and prep for the yearly camp out. This is also good.

Found out yesterday that one of my best friends at work got canned for trumped up bullshit after eight years of service. In its own way, this is also good, but it's still a steaming pile of fetid bovine excrement. Resolve has been cemented, and the job search begins in earnest. I'm not waiting around for that to happen to me.

But now, back to the camp prep. I still have five and a half days that I don't have to think about that place, with the last day being the one where we move into our practice space. This is good, and I intend to make full use of all time away, as they're not giving me any serious reason to want to go back.

Fuck it, whatever. Back to the good.

9:37 pm - Trip log: Illinois, I think...
So.

Landed in Columbus and realized that I didn't have my sister's current cell number. An hour plus later, ran into my brother in law, and all was well. Spent a lovely day poking about Columbus, and discovered at least 3 really tastey local breweries. Also, had the best ice cream I've ever tasted there, too.

Napped for most of the ride through Ohio. Pretty sure I didn't miss a hell of a lot.

Got to Kentucky and massive cat drama occured. Long story short, never fly your pet Delta if you've got to fly them somewhere. They shoved my sister's cat into the back of a storage closet in Detroit and lost him for 24 hours. He's now safe at my mom's place, luckily.

Packed the house into the truck, had some backyard bonfires, chatted with the neighbors, sent several warning shots to my liver in preperation for Memorial Day. All in all a pleasent way to spend three days.

Today, did a tour of the Woodford Reserve distillery in Versailles, KY, just outside of Lexington. Fun fact, folks: it is illegal to sell or serve alcohol on an election day from 6am-6pm in Kentucky. Today was an election day, and therefore no samples of the wares to be had.

Fucking Kentucky.

On the upside, we stopped at an amazing brewpub in Louisville for dinner. At 6:15 pm. We had to wait almost an hour for a table. Apparently voting is thirsty work...
The beer was very good, which was a pleasent surprise after my last trip out this way 5ish years ago. The BBQ was to die for, as expected.

We're now somewhere just across the Illinois border, I believe, with a goal of St. Louis for breakfast.

Pics of Woodford can be found on the Facebook.

6:04 am - Detroit
Four hours is a fuck of a long time to sit in an airport. As far as airports go it's a nice one, and it beats the hell out of being stuck in a Little Rock Greyhound station for six hours, but still...

8:09 pm - Packing, because the last minute is always best
And so it begins. The extradition of astrokate from Kentucky begins, and my flight leaves in 3 hours. Time to pack and get my ass to the airport.

When I get back, I get to move into our shiny new practice space.

At least I'll get to sleep on the plane.

We got a 2 mic room sound recording of one of our songs today at practice.

Damn.

There were mistakes, for certain, but yeah... it actually sounded pretty good. If this is any indication of where we'll be by the time we hit the stage, I'm a happy, happy drummer.

10:18 pm - Getting back
Had band practice today, and somewhere in there something clicked. My body began to remember how this game is played. I was starting to do the things I know I can do, without having to force it.

I need my endurance back, and I've got blisters where my callouses used to be, but I'm getting there. It's becoming more of a reality to me. This makes me kinda giddy, really. I've missed it. I walked into the practice room at one point, and it even *smelled* right. Not to say that it would smell good to most anyone else, but there's something about the smell of sweat, hot tubes and solid-state equipment mixed together that will always bring a smile to my face.

junya had his new set up there today, too. Hot damn, that sounds sweet. feardiagh has improved greatly just in the last couple of weeks. Markedly so, actually. So awesome to hear. We borrowed the Beeflord from johnnymohawk for our bassist, and I think this was the first practice where we could actually hear each other. Got our cover song mostly figured out, which isn't bad considering our singer doesn't get in until mid-April. Got other bits to some original stuff laid out. On stage by October is looking like a far more feasible goal. This, too, pleases me greatly.

I hurt. I hurt in places that haven't been sore for far, far too long. This, as a third point, also makes me smile. I've needed this. I had no idea how much I was missing it.

Had dinner at Paddy Coyne's. Tasty.

Whiskey a plenty, with beer backs.

Saw Ubik live, finally. Bad. Ass.
More beer here.

A medium pizza from my late night saviors later and life is exactly where it was meant to be.

A good start to the weekend.

I think we may be close to actually naming the music project we've been working on.

This will move it from the "4 guys fucking around in a basement" status to "band practice" in my head.

I'm much more likely to set aside time for "band practice".

...this is good, since apparently our goal is to be on stage with a 45ish minute set by October, and my kick leg crapped out before we even got through one song last Sunday. Granted, it was the 5th or 6th time through the 3-5 minute song...

Practice.

I need some.

12:14 am - So, there is is, then. Suggestions, anyone?
Almost 5 years after I drove my sister and her (then new) husband's things out to West Virginia for them. That trip was me and a dog in the cab of a Penske truck crossing the country in just under 3 days (I could've made it faster, but I wanted to see some things along the way).

In May, I fly out and get to drive a truck back again. This time, it'll be me and my sister... and the same dog. Also, I've been told that it will not be a 3 day trip, as apparently you can't actually see anything when crossing the country that quickly. I would beg to differ, but I digress.

I need to remember to ask for the last two weeks of May off tomorrow when I get into work, as regardless of what position I'm working at that time, I want the time off on the calendar. I got confirmation of my flight out at departing SeaTac at 11:50pm on 5/14/10, and arriving in Columbus 11:10am on 5/15/10. There's a 3 hour layover in Detroit. That should give me plenty of time to find a bar...

My sister wants to see Arches National Park in Utah, and I fully condone this. This is, thus far, our only "must see" destination between Louisa, KY and Coupeville, WA. With the stipulation that we'll be headed more or less West (pretty much any direction but East, really, due to *some* time and fuel cost constraints) beginning the morning of 5/17/10 and I need to be back in Seattle by 5/26/10 to give me time to pack for an annual camping debauch the weekend of 5/28-5/31, I guess the question is:

What the hell is there to see in the middle of the lower 48?

I've never been to Texas, so I may plan a route skirting through that state... granted, I've never been to Kansas, either, and the most direct route to UT from KY is straight through KS.

I know there are folks on this list that have spent not insignificant portions of their lives in the Mid-West... what's there to see?

The other alternative, of course, may be to bomb across country to Utah, and then take a minor detour through California --specifically the Bay Area-- on the way back up to Washington... I kinda like the sound of that... I may have to give it some more thought and see if lil' sis' is up for it...

Things to ponder, for certain.
